Located on the eastern tip of Puerto Rico, Fajardo offers some of the best snorkeling on the mainland.
Seven Seas Beach, located in Fajardo, is a smaller, less crowded beach. There is an onsite snack bar and picnic area, but no restrooms, which is a good thing to keep in mind. Offshore reefs protect the shallow water, making it a good place for snorkelers of any experience level. Lifeguards are also on duty during normal hours so it is a great place for families. A small reef to the right of the beach features shallow waters with vibrant tropical fish and coral reefs, making Seven Seas Beach a fantastic spot for Fajardo snorkeling.
Playa Laguna Aguas Prietas is accessible via rough dirt roads through the forest. There are no restrooms or onsite facilities here, so visitors will need to pack their own supplies for a longer trip. At Playa Laguna Aguas Prietas, tan sand leads up to beautiful turquoise waters. Larger patches of coral exist just off the shore, which is fantastic for snorkelers looking to interact with local marine life.
Cordillera Keys is a string of 10 islands known collectively as ‘La Cordillera’. Located 6.2 miles northeast of Fajardo, the islands can be reached by a short boat ride. This chain of uninhabited islands offers plenty of underwater life for snorkelers. It is also part of nature reserve, which serves as a habitat for sea turtles, friendly tropical fish and vibrant coral.
Average water visibility for Fajardo snorkeling is around 15 meters, but can reach up to 50 meters depending on conditions. Fajardo, Puerto Rico offers large and well-developed coral reefs that provide refuge for a wide variety of marine animals.
How to Get to Fajardo
International visitors will fly into San Juan International Airport (SJU), the main airport in Puerto Rico. From the airport, travelers can then rent a car or take a taxi for the hour-long ride to Fajardo, located on the eastern coast of Puerto Rico. From Fajardo, Cordillera Keys can be reached by a short boat ride.

The best time to visit Puerto Rico for Fajardo snorkeling is mid-April to June. During this period, average temperatures are around +27C and water temperatures that hover around +26C. Though winter season has slight better weather, it is much more crowded and accommodations are more costly.
