The Hike to Waterlemon Cay

Once on the island of St. John, you will need to venture to the eastern side of Leinster Bay, which is located on the north shore of St. John. You will see a road leading to Annaberg, and here there will be a trail leading to Waterlemon Cay. The ¾-mile hike to Waterlemon Beach will take you about 20 minutes and is scenic and flat. The short hike is definitely worth it to see everything that Waterlemon Cay snorkeling has to offer!

Snorkeling Waterlemon Cay

Once you are at Waterlemon Beach, you can enter the water anywhere. The bottom is generally sandy, but those with sensitive feet may want to consider footwear. If you swim over here, you can see sponges and fish like Angelfish, Filefish, Cowfish, Blenny and Needlefish. From this rocky point, if you have the energy, you can swim toward the actual island. Visibility is generally good for Waterlemon Cay snorkeling and you can see schools of Blue Tangs, Parrotfish and Wrasse throughout the reef.

When planning your trip to Waterlemon Cay in St. John, consider traveling between April and June. Temperatures will be milder and there will be very little rainfall during this time. It also allows you to avoid the busy winter season where flights and accommodations will be more costly. You will enjoy warm temperatures averaging in the high 20s (mid 80s) when visiting Waterlemon Cay, so make sure to pack those beach clothes!

Waterlemon Cay snorkeling is the best that St. John has to offer. It is well worth the short hike to swim among Green Sea Turtles, rays and starfish.
